Toddler Program

Ages 2 years old.

The toddlers at I Can Preschool and Child Care experience educator interactions that are highly receptive to their individual needs. These efforts promote the social - emotional, language, and cognitive development of our toddler students. We provide a nurturing environment that cultivates frequent opportunities for learning, relationship building, and family engagement. Our research and evidence based responsive caregiving techniques and curriculum are guided by the publications made available by the Child Development Division, California Department of Education (CDE).

Curriculum

The curriculum that is provided for our toddler students focuses on the four domains of development as outlined in the California Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations, published by the CDE in 2009. The domains are represented in the following areas of early child development, social emotional development, language development, cognitive development, and perceptual and motor development. Our Schedule of Daily Activities and our Daily Lesson Plans directly align with the developmental foundations for toddlers age 24 - 36 months. Our curriculum framework is inspired by the California Infant/Toddler Curriculum Framework, published by the CDE in 2012. Curriculum implementation is structured by the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Early Childhood Education. Applying UDL safeguards our ability to deliver early education that is culturally responsive, equitable, inclusive, and flexible. The goal of our toddler program is to provide student readiness for the expectations of future classroom settings and early education experiences.

Environment

The environment of our toddler classroom focuses on educator – student interactions, that are high quality in teacher sensitivity, conducting facilitated exploration, and creating a relational climate. Toddler environments are carefully designed through the utilization of the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS – 3). Applying an environment assessment tool helps sustain environmental quality, and safety using age-appropriate materials, and classroom furniture. Environment planning is directed by The Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Program Guidelines, Second Edition, developed by the Early Learning and Care Division, CDE. Teacher – Student interactions are guided by Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP). Utilizing DAP guarantees that the early learning environment is safe, nurturing, and supportive.
